Um, just because Watson is a woman, doesn’t necessarily equate to overt romantic tension, nor have I seen anything on tumblr from an official source suggesting there will BE romantic tension (I could be wrong, I’m not an active participant in the Sherlock fandom and I’ve only seen this pop up on my dash a few times). HOWEVER, one of the most irksome things for me about Sherlock is the lack of strong female characters who do not have to at some point in the series basically depend on a man/endure the humiliation of being defeated by a man/serve as a plot device. Say what you will about Irene Adler, the Sherlock series took the only woman to ever canonically outwit Sherlock Holmes and made it so that she was in turn outwitted by Sherlock, then later forced to depend on him to save her life in a jam she got into. The closest thing Sherlock has to a strong female character is Molly, who is only strong in the context that she is able to forgive Sherlock for his multiple gaffes and be there FOR HIM when he needs her. I’m not about to write off having a female Watson as a bad thing- Watson’s always been an assistant to Holmes, but also very much an independent and strong character, and just the fact that HE might be a SHE doesn’t mean that she’ll definitively just be Holmes’s throwaway love interest. I don’t view Holmes as sexual or romantic though, which might affect my judgement, and I admit I may not know all the details, but come on guys, either don’t watch it if it upsets you or, if you intend to watch it, give it a -chance-.
